BREED INFORMATION

The Snowshoe is a medium sized cat, combining the heftiness of the shorthair with the length of its oriental ancestors. The cat is well balanced overall, neither too small nor too large. It is firm and muscular, deceptively powerful and agile. A long cat, it has the appearance of a runner rather than a weightlifter, but not for long i'm sure.

The temperament is described as ‘bombproof’ and indeed little seems to faze them. They are great extroverts at shows, revelling in the attention they receive. They love interactive play with their owners, quickly learning how to play ‘fetch’ (they may even teach you how to do this!). Fishing rod toys are a great favourite, as are climbing frames, especially those that include a tunnel or hammock. They are quick, intelligent and love human company. They also readily accept other breeds of cats, dogs and of course children! The ideal all-round cat.

The combination of blue eyes, pointed pattern and white trim makes the Snowshoe unique amongst shorthaired cats.

The ‘Preferred’ pattern is most striking, but very difficult to achieve. Some American breeders describe Snowshoes as being ‘as different as pebbles on the beach’, each kitten showing its own distinctive pattern, each having its own unique appeal.

And now for something a little different.

Meet Sensay Squadron Leader (Sonny) a Seal Pointed Bicolour Oriental and Sensay Sorbet (Suzie) a Chocolate Pointed Bicolour Oriental.

I had been admiring this breed at cat shows for around a year, and finally succumbed! The attraction is obvious, the colours, patterns and blue eyes are so similar to my beloved Snowshoes. Sonny in particular reminds me of my foundation queen, Arctic-Moon Bathsheba (see ‘History of the Coldenufforsnow Cattery on the History page’.)

Sonny has been shown with GCCF and Tica. At his first GCCF show he was awarded his merit and had a red card day. At his next two GCCF shows he again gained his merits, and was well placed in his side classes.
At his first Tica shows he did extremely well taking four titles! His current title is Triple Grand Champion Alter. What a star.

Suzi has been lightly shown with the GCCF.

Before she made her debut the breed was promoted from preliminary to provisional level. Suzie has been awarded her first intermediate certificate. The plan is now for her to go to stud.
